Round 5 At Wrexham Club 6th July 2008

The BRCA 1/10th IC 200mm Scale Touring Championship crossed the border into Wales for round 5 at the Wrexham Club in North Wales and the weather forecast was not looking good and with the championship still wide open it is still all to play for.
Saturday
With only 19 drivers entered there was going to be lots of room on the rostrum but from the start it was rain rain rain but with a break in the weather at 10.40 Matt Cook was the first to venture out on to the track more drivers followed all getting some practice on the tight twisty in field. During the morning both Daniel Williams and Simon Wood both lost their gazebos to the windy weather.  By 1pm the clouds dispersed with occasional sunshine things started to look good, with everyone getting lots of track time most drivers seemed happy. But by 4pm more rain showers and this is how the day finished

Sunday
The track was soaked from the early rain, 9 am Vice Chairman Wayne Lander called drivers briefing told the drivers the format for the day, and also pointed out the stop go penalty box at the end of the pitlane. Race Director Andy from Wrexham Club pointed out a few rules and told everyone any problems to see him on Monday. First heat on the line 9.30am
Qualifying
Round 1
With the track wet tyres choice was on everyone’s mind do they go rubber tyres? Wet foams?
Heat 1 the top three in this heat were Matthew Cook, Neil Wallace and Matt Williams all on 14 laps.
Heat 2 Joe Kerry and Adam Walker Catchpole set the pace here with 15 laps a piece.
Heat 3 With the track drying Mark Gilliland put in a blistering 17 lap in 317.26
The track was proving a problem to some drivers who struggled with the tight twisty infield.

Round 2
With a dry line appearing on the track in parts and now sunshine the day was looking good.
Heat 1 No changes in this heat
Heat 2 Adam W Catchpole put in 17laps in311.36 followed by Joe Kerry on 16laps and Matthew Oke on 15 laps.
Heat 3 Mark Gilliland went quicker with 17laps in 304.26 followed by Kyle Branson and Simon Wood both on 17laps

Round 3 The track was getting hotter you could see the steam rising off the track and drying very quickly
Heat 1 Matt Williams found the right setup and put in a good run with 17laps in 312.92 followed by Matthew Cook also 17laps in 314.51 and Adrian Garlick with 16laps in313.40.
Heat 2 Adam W Catchpole improved with 18laps in 307.25 and very close behind Pete Watt with 18laps in309.54, Joe Kerry 17laps in 301.76.
Heat 3 Mark Gilliland found the right groove going quicker with 19laps in 313.44 and Steve Brown right on Marks bumper also with 19 in 314.90.
So after the third qualifying session we had a break for lunch

Round 4 With a dry track and sunshine it was like a summer’s day at Wrexham.
Heat 1 Matthew Cook, Adrian Garlick and Neil Wallace all on 17laps but a disaster for Matt Williams down the back straight took a tumble right into Kellogg’s bend fencing and broke his camber link.
Heat 2 Adam W Catchpole, Pete Watt, Joe Kerry and Daniel Williams all on 18laps only seconds between them
Heat 3 Mark Green found the speed and setup in this round to be on 19laps with Mark Gilliland, Kyle Branson and Neal King
Qualifying over and the rain in the hills around there was a short break,

Finals
B Final 20 mins With 5 minutes before the final Neil Wallace found his rear drive belt stripped, but with the help of his pitman Andrew Partridge just got to the start in time. It was a dry start, everyone got away with Matt Williams going from 5th on the grid to 3rd by the first corner but lost the place by the next corner, Joe Kerry had radio interference from the start and pulled out after 7laps, Daniel Williams at 11 minutes was in first place Jonathan Dobney in 2nd and Matthew Cook in 3rd, Matt Williams 4th and Neil Wallace in 5th place, Adrian Garlick was the first to drop out nothing wrong just called it a day. Matt Williams dropped out on lap40 with radio interference and by lap 42 Jonathan Dobney was in first place followed by Daniel Williams and Matthew Cook in 3rd. As Neil Wallace went down the back straight his offside rear tyre exploded but he came into the pits had all four tyres changed and was back out. There was battle going on towards the end with Jonathan and Daniel there was not much between them they change places a few times, but as the 20minutes came round Jonathan held 1st and Daniel took 2nd with Matthew Cook 3rd.

B Final
1st Jonathan Dobney
2nd Daniel Williams
3rd Matthew Cook

A Final 30 mins At about 10 minutes before the start of the A Final the heavens opened and it poured so the drivers had to change tyres and make adjustments to their cars.
A good clean start by all and at lap 4 Kyle Branson was in first, Steve Brown 2nd and Mark Gilliland in 3rd place. Disaster struck for Neal King on lap 29 with steering problems but worse was to come for Neal as they went back to the pits he realized that during some refit of the car electrics they forgot to put his personal transponder back in the car so had to go back to the race with a club transponder to get some laps in to get some points. Lap 32 Kyle Branson still in 1st with a big lead over second place Steve Brown, Mark Gilliland in 3rd place, lap 37 Simon Wood just touched the grass and tumbled down the back straight into the wire fence and broke a rear camber link. Chris Slater changed tyres on lap 57 and was back in after 5 laps yet another wheel fell off seems to happen a lot for Chris, Adam W Catchpole`s car stopped on lap 71 but his pitman got him going and back out but down the field. On Lap 78 Steve Brown`s car went off the track his car seemed to be leaning to the left something not quite right and he retired next lap, Mark Gilliland took 1st place from Kyle on lap 83 and Mark Green up to 3rd place as some drivers came in for new tyres then Kyle Branson rolled his car on lap 85 right by race control. Lap 90 saw Steve Brown retired, and with only 2minutes left on the clock Kyle Branson lost a wheel this put him down to 3rd place as Mark Green passed to put him in 2nd place and Mark Gilliland in 1st Place.

A Final
1st Mark Gilliland
2nd Mark Green
3rd Kyle Branson
