So your engine won’t run properly
First of I take no responsibility on how you do set up your engine these are for a guideline only
Well first make sure that there is compression on the engine by turning the fly wheel over by hand if its easy and you feel no force in it then its time for a new piston & liner but if it turns over with a "pop" then its O.K So first of all if your on the track & it seems to cut when you slow down or when you come to a corner then its more likely to be the clutch which means the clearance is not set properly and we have clutch drag this is where the clutch disengages to late and cuts the engine so refer to the kit set up on the clutch settings.
Then we have the one where it starts and then cuts when you open her up and this is more likely to be the bottom end settings.
So how do we adjust it? Well this all depends on how you adjust the bottom end, as there are two screws. Now which one of these do you adjust on your car some will use no 1 screw (like me) Or some of you will use No 2 screw
GOLDEN RULE NO 1.
So first of undo the top end screw 1 full turn you can’t hurt the engine when it’s rich.
With the engine running give it a quick full throttle open then back to tick over now let it idle for 20/30 seconds then open her up if it splutters and cuts then its to rich at the bottom, so screw IN the bottom end screw ¼ a turn. Fire it up again and again rev the engine to clear the exhaust pipe then back to tick over again 20/30 seconds then rev it up if it splutters a little then runs then its almost set so screw in the bottom about 2 mill (when we say 2mm imagine a clock face and the screw flat is straight across like a line from 9 to 3 well we want 2mm so the screw slot should be 10 and 4 see figure 1
If it sounds ok then its set, all we need to do now is the top end screw 1
Now again this is for a guideline only and I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY if you go over the top!!
So around the track you go and as you go down the straight you should see some white smoke this is good as its oiling up the bearings (and the piston) now as you come to a bend and slow down is the engine slowing as well or is it running on?
If its running on then the bottom end is a little lean so come back out with the screw 1mm and try again & repeat to all is good
So the top end is adjusted how?
Well there is 3 ways to set the top end that I know of the first is with a
1 Temperature gun
This is set to around 230/250deg F. Now to do this you need to do at least 5 hard laps of any track when I mean hard I mean really going for it. Its no good going slow and then the pit man sets it a bit leaner then as you go in to a race and push hard it's going to fry?
2 Spit method
This is done as above but with a bit of saliva (spit) on your finger then dab it on the cylinder head if it evaporates away then its O.K. but if it goes to little balls and dance’s on the head then its to hot so come out on the top screw about 2mm and try again?
3 It goes well
This is where some people don’t bother what the temperature is they just set it and run it. Must have money to burn….And I even took a reading of some 350f wow???
Well I personally use method No 1 and leave it at that but do remember this when you go into the straight you want to see some smoke ok.
