B.R.C.A. 1/10th I.C. 200mm Foam National Round 7
At Halifax Club in Yorkshire on 31st August 08
The BRCA 1/10th IC 200mm Scale Touring Championship round 7 went to Halifax Club in Yorkshire, after the torrential flood back in January it was nice to see the track and surrounding buildings looking A1. A lot of drivers arrived Friday afternoon to set up camp all hoping for a dry meeting.
Saturday
The pits soon started to fill up with drivers and with the weather forecast for sunshine it did not take long before the first drivers went out for practice on the track. By the afternoon the talk in the pits was how to attract more drivers for next year; everyone had their own ideas but the only way to attend the BRCA A.G.M. and vote. Everyone was looking forward to the Bar-B-Q on Saturday night, which Julie Thurston and Julia Branson had been busy preparing all day for 60 people. Many thanks from all that attended.
Sunday
With 39 drivers booked in and the forecast for rain everyone wanted to get started. So drivers briefing was at 9.10am where Wayne Lander Vice Chairman told everyone that any proposals for the AGM had to be with the committee by the end of the day the meeting got under way at 9:30am.
Qualifying
With four rounds of qualifying and 39 drivers we had five heats, round one the track was slightly damp so a lot of drivers went with 35 or 37 shore tyres. As round two got underway we had a heavy shower most drivers stayed on wet foams, some went on rubber. By round three the grip was coming up and the qualifying times were getting quicker. Round four we had a dry line starting to come through but only a few had better qualifying times.
Well with qualifying over we had a 45 minute break for lunch this also gave people a chance to check their cars and get ready for the finals.
Finals
D Final
1st Trevor Villa
2nd Hayley Baker
3rd Mark Newby
D Final 15 mins
With a good start Mark Newby went from 4th place to first and led the first 14 laps, where Hayley Baker took the lead, Trevor Villa was chasing hard putting Hayley under pressure this paid off for Trevor and he took the lead on lap 23 and never looked back. Oisin O`Brian was now in 3rd place but by now was under pressure from Mark Newby who was now down in fourth place. So by lap 23 Mark took 3rd place, Haley was still in 2nd and Trevor was First that’s how it finished.
C Final
1st Joe Kerry
2nd Chris Daft
3rd Keith Dempsey
C Final 15 mins
With dark skies over head the rain was imminent so the question is what tyres? Most took the chance and went for foam. Young Joe Kerry who was on pole lost it on the first lap to Keith Dempsey but shortly after that Chris Daft was in first place and held it till lap 4 when Joe Kerry went down the inside of Chris and took the lead, and from there he did not put a tyre wrong even his pitman did not let him down. Jon Withington had problems very early into the race this gave Keith Dempsey 3rd place by the half way point the order was Joe Kerry followed by Chris Daft who was in 2nd place and Keith Dempsey in 3rd and that’s how they finished.
B Final
1st Matthew Cook
2nd Alex Thurston
3rd Paul Cook
B Final 20 mins
Just as the cars went to the start line the rain started some did not make the starting grid of the final one of those being Alex Thurston because he wanted wet tyres this gamble paid off because race leader Daniel Williams and 2nd place Peter Craig both came in for wet tyres on the second lap, this gave young Alex Thurston the lead. Most other drivers were drifting and some were very good at it, by lap 9 we lost Robin Hammett and Fred Singleton too electrical problems, and Neil Wallace came in for a change of tyres. After the first fuel stop Matthew Cook was in 2nd place and closing in on Alex who was in 1st place, most of the other drivers were pirouetting and drifting round corners. Neil Wallace was back in the pits for another change of tyres but lost so much time so he retired, Matthew Cook seemed to find traction and not putting a wheel wrong on lap 34 he was closing in on Alex and on the second hairpin Alex just went off onto the grass and Matthew took the lead, Alex got back on the track to be in second and Peter Cook was in 3rd
A Final
1st Adam Walker Catchpole
2nd Kyle Branson
3rd Mark Green
A Final 30 mins
The weather played a big part in this final, with Paul Knapton and Steve Brown deciding not to run we only had 8 drivers, as the umbrellas went up the flag went down for the start, all got away at a slow pace. Adam Walker Catchpole got the best start from 4th on the grid went straight to 1st; Kyle Branson in 2nd and 3rd was Mark Gilliland. Lap 7 Pete Watt`s rubber tyre came unglued and retired, Johnathan Dobney had to come in to the pits as his transponder was not working so had to get a club transponder but this stop cost Johnathan 5mins At the first fuel stop Mark Green was jostling for 3rd place with Mark Gilliland, Chris Slater retired on lap 33 the weather had made his car difficult to handle, Johnathan Dobney had further problems with a rear camber link broken this put him out of the race, at the half way point Adam was still in 1st, Kyle in 2nd and Mark Green now in a safe 3rd place. These positions never changed and this was how they finished.
So as I predicted back at Aldershot at the beginning of the series this year’s championship is going to the last round. It is between Mark Green and Kyle Branson and it is a circuit that they both know and like, it’s a fast flowing track and all eyes will be on the last round a final not to be missed
Many thanks from the BRCA 1/10TH IC Section to Halifax Club and Ann in the cafe and our own Race Director Malcolm Norwood who also setup a BBK Wireless Networking to give us access to race results on our Laptops or PDA's. Also we must thank some young driver from Dublin for attending our meeting.
